Learning Skills is an active dynamic process and it can be improved. Anyone can develop their memory and learning ability if guided through proper educator  which act as a facilator. Identifying your own learning style and the methods that work for you is key. Better functioning of your brain depend upon its usage, the more you use your brain the better it will work

Every day we learn something new and we need to takes commitment and self discipline as well as conscious practice. Your notion of what learning is and your motivation to study will determine your success. No learning methods or techniques will help if the motivation to study is missing. You have to identify for yourself why studying is important and what are you aiming for in your studies. Learning only happens only if you make a direct effort from your side.

Utilize your own knowledge when you are trying to learn something new.

Gathering information and learning something new go hand in hand. New information will remain in your brain if it is in some way significant to you. Learning gets simpler the more knowledge you have to which new information can be connected.

You can develop your learning skills through active and critical thinking, questioning assumptions, and applying knowledge practically. How you organise new information is crucial to learning.


Pragmatic Guide for learning


  1. Make serial notes

The importance of taking notes is to judge what you are learning , how much you have understand and support your memory and the learning process. Making serial notes helps you to gain at a glance  what you are learning. Taking relevant notes at lectures or from a book will be an invaluable help when revising for exams.


  • Note down important point from what the lectures is saying. Use highlight colours  in your notes for something as important and question marks to show that you did not quite understand something.


  • If you don’t understand something go ahead and ask the lecturer. You are probably not the only one who would like the point in question to be explained again.


  • After your class gets over, arrange  the information you have just received. Before taking down notes, think about what you already know about the subject being taught. If you do not understand some-thing, read as far back into your notes as you need until you understand again. If it’s not fruitful then better you contact your lecturer so that doubts get clear and you can have a clear concept what is been taught during your lesson.


  1. Summarizing

Methods based on condensing information, summarizing and the use of keywords.

Writing a summary involve condensing the large amount of information from a course or book into shorter notes in your own words help you to condensed further into key facts.

Write about the subject as briefly as possible without looking at the book or your notes and im-agine that you are writing it for someone who is not familiar with the subject. You may benefit from using a Spider diagrams or concept map.


  1. Spider diagrams or Concept map


A concept map or Spider diagrams  may help you to link information as it illustrates the relationship between things. The purpose of a concept map is to bring together everything you have learnt by arrang-ing the main ideas into themes. These tools can give a visual summary of a topic that preserves its logical structure, with lines used to show how different parts link together.It is an effective way of linking concepts together


  1. Group Study  

Discuss the subject problems with other students. Working through questions and ideas together is useful from the perspective of learning. Because some of the answers they might know or vice versa will help to solve problem of each other Teach what you have learnt to someone not familiar with the subject area. Teaching something to someone else helps you to see not only how much you already know but also what your limi-tations and problem areas are.


5. Study sessions

Time management in study sessions aims to ensure that activities that achieve the greatest benefit are given the greatest focus. A traffic lights system is a simple way of identifying the importance of information, highlighting or underlining information in colours:

  • Green: topics to be studied first; important and also simple
  • Amber: topics to be studied next; important but time-consuming
  • Red: lowest priority; complex and not vital.

This reminds students to start with the things which will provide the quickest benefit, while ‘red’ topics are only dealt with if time allows.


  1. Keep a learning diary

The purpose of a learning diary is to help you organise and observe your own pro-gress. It deepens and enriches the learning process and works as a tool for evaluating your learning.

  • Use the diary to write down your own insights, perceptions and questions as well as things you need to find out or problems you need to solve. Write regularly.


  1. Develop your memory using memory techniques based on acronyms and mnemonics


There are a variety of memory techniques that can make remembering and learning easier.

  • Try associating the things you have to remember with landmarks on a familiar route. E.g. glucose is on the book shelf, insulin is on the window sill, adrenalin is in the kitchen cup-board etc
  • Create and use existing acronyms, e.g  the points of the compass can be recalled in the correct order with the phrase “Never Eat Shredded Wheat”. Starting with North, the first letter of each word relates to a compass point in clockwise order round a compass.



  1. Analyze your learning style

Visualize study experience where you performed well. Think about how you went about working, the type of work process that led to this successful learning outcome. Consider the following:

Where were you? Was it hot or cols? Was it bright or dim lit? Were you listening to mu-sic? What kind of music? Were there other sounds in the background?

  1. Brain rest

A goodnight’s sleep helps to  functions of the brain and memory. The things you have learnt will  be retained in the memory only if you had good sleep. In sufficient sleep also weakens your concentration and increases restlessness.Get a goodnight’s sleep before your exam instead of reviewing one last time late into the night.

  • Get enough sleep.
  • Protect your brain

Support your brain with a healthy diet.

  • Nourish your brain

Eat and drink enough, but not too much.

Keeping your body well hydrated is essential to concentration and learning, so remember to drink enough water.
